The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Thursday approved Viagra® as a treatment for.
The FDA said the drug was approved for use in men after a recent study in which researchers compared male volunteers with either placebo and sildenafil, or placebo and diclofenac, to the men of the same age who took a placebo pill for two weeks and then took sildenafil for two weeks. Chasman, chairman, chief executive and president of the FDA. “It has also been challenging for the physicians to determine which medications are safe and effective, as well as the safety and efficacy of sildenafil or placebo.”
“We are pleased that Pfizer has approved sildenafil for the treatment of ED in the U. S.,” said Dr. Elizabeth K. Menzgaard, an associate professor of urology at New York University School of Medicine, and the lead author of the study. “This approval represents a significant milestone in Pfizer’s efforts to advance the treatment of ED in the U. S.”
Viagra® is a brand name for sildenafil. The drug is available as generic Viagra and the brand name is Staxyn®, which was previously known as Vardenafil. Generic versions are available at pharmacies.

The FDA has already issued a warning that the drug may cause serious side effects, including a heart attack or stroke. In the case of sildenafil, the FDA found the drug did not cause the symptoms. “In the case of sildenafil, the heart rate is higher and blood pressure is lower than in the placebo group,” Lang said. “This shows that the drug may not be safe for use by patients who have diabetes.”
